C5 - Intensive programmes for higher education learners

Student Workshop, The large scale, in combination with the Universal Design Practices Conference II_Universal Design and cooperation with Universal Design Institute, October 2018

The workshop is linked to the Universal Design Conferences I in Detmold, Germany. In this workshop the developed criteria will be applied, furthermore the case studies will be investigated and assessed. Output is a comprehensive documentation on the workshops results Outcomes are on both design and education through Universal Design principles and practice.

For the benefit of O7 (Scientific Papers) and O8 (Game software) Outputs, the theme for C5 and C10 is agreed to be developed under User Interface and Experience in Design Education. Teaching workshop will be planned to inform and give instructions for the instructors who will then tutor the students during the student workshop. One suggestion was to set this workshop as a charette. All design students as well as multimedia or information design students would be asked to join the workshop. They would form teams and develop some ideas about the game design. Another idea and also a combination of the potential ideas will be determined at the end of the workshop, and team members will be recruited to develop the game software.

As described in E2 the goal of the student workshop is to define the different parameters for Universal Design in schools and generate first visions on how to implement those into a digital/analog "teaching/ learning environment“ (tool) that uses gamification as a motivator (O8). There will be a specific focus on the interaction mechanisms that are necessary for the creation of a learning environment (digital and/ or analog). Within these activities it is important to mention that physical elements, objects and spaces will be made a topic of discussion in the same way as digital media, tools and environments. Both advantages and disadvantages will be evaluated by the workshop’s participants.

The workshop will be supported by different experts within the field of inclusive design as well as different excursions to get an impression on diverse concepts of inclusion from the public area (schools, organisations) around the location of Lippe. It is planned to accompany the content work by different social events that will help the participants to practice participatory methods, create awareness and empathy, and strengthen their social skills. A first draft will now be discussed with the other project partners to design an activity that builds upon the previous step and that paves the way for the following steps.
